Earlier today BJP MP Subramaniam Swami sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's interventions to direct the Education Ministry to postpone the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) still Diwali.
"The Supreme Court has given a very clear order. NEET 2020 will not be postponed", Amit Khare, Secretary, HRD.
NEET 2020 is scheduled from September 13 while the JEE Mains is to be held between the September 1 to September 6. Both of these exam has been postponed a number of times due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
On August 15, the Supreme Court of India dismissed a plea seeking postponement of Joint Entrance Examination and the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test 2020.
After Swami, the National Students Union of India on August 21 also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demand their postponement, citing the danger to the life of students amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Earlier this week, the plea for postponing JEE and NEET 2020 examination was presented to the Supreme Court. 3 other petitions were also filed, asking the Supreme Court to ensure that the examinations were not postponed.
Supreme Court had dismissed the petition to postponed examination noting that the exams cannot be indefinitely deferred. Pursuant to that, pleas were sent to the PMO for the same.
Dashing the hops of thousand of students, Amit Khare, Secretary Ministry of Education has confirmed that the entrance examination cannot be postponed referring to the Supreme Court order, he has stated that the SC was very clear in its order and examination cannot be postponed. This comes after a last attempt was made to postponed the examination.
According to the instructions those appearing the JEE mains scheduled in the first week of September will have to submit a self declaration form along with the photograph, saying they have not tested positive for covid-19 and have not had any symptoms like fever, dry cough or difficulty in breathing in the recent days.
This form will have to submitted at the examination centre after it is verified by an exam centre officer and signed by the candidate on the spot.
A similar set of instructions is likely to be issued for the NEET candidates soon.
The Supreme Court rejected the plea, saying that the "precious year of student cannot be wasted and life has to go on".
